Caring for the youngest, the vulnerable, the sick, and the elderly is a fundamental dimension of family life. Within the family—comprising parents, siblings, and children—it is often possible, in most cases, to experience the presence of individuals you can rely on, freely and unconditionally.

It is estimated that there are approximately 8.5 million caregivers in Italy, of whom 7.3 million dedicate themselves to the care of their relatives (Istat). The responsibility of caregiving falls disproportionately on women, who account for 71% of caregivers.

Tasks such as administering medication, accompanying individuals to medical appointments or therapies, providing personal hygiene assistance, and preparing meals require consistent commitment and dedication. Being a caregiver demands total devotion, which the Romans referred to as pietas.

Although the 2018 budget law officially recognized the role of the family caregiver, there is still no national legislation offering clear guidelines for support, an issue that is becoming increasingly urgent.
