Being born in Italy today is rare and of great value.
In 2023, there were only 379,000 newborns, which translates to just over 6 births per 1,000 inhabitants. Siblings are also becoming less common, as the average number of children per woman was 1.20.
In 2024, Italy’s total population was 58,900,000, with an average age of 46.6 years. The elderly (those over 80) number 4,554,000, exceeding the number of children (4,441,000).
According to an international study, family units are increasingly shrinking, with children having fewer siblings and cousins. By the end of the 21st century, an individual of middle age in Italy is projected to have no more than 12 living relatives.
